Retaining wall

Projecting the future garden, first of all mark a site relief. Often plots are located on hill-sides, slopes of ravines, on coast of the rivers. Quite often after civil work on a plot the artificial relief is formed. The lay-out of such garden will demand the device of horizontal surfaces for landings, but full alignment of a surface is inexpedient, therefore use a terracing method. Plot terracing is a formation of the horizontal ledges (terraces) strengthened by retaining walls. Such design decision will help to protect the earth from soil erosion, and retaining walls will prevent soil washing out.

Retaining walls carry out both practical and decorative function. On a site with a bias or a difficult relief they allow to spend terracing, on an equal surface low retaining walls can allocate a part of the raised garden. It will give to a plot an original relief and dimensions and will make it visually more interesting. The material choice, a configuration and the sizes of a retaining wall depend on the garden concept.

Designs of retaining walls can be different and depend on terrace height. Following constructive decisions of retaining walls are most extended: concrete with facing by a natural stone or a tile, stone, spread by flagstone.

The device of the bases from rubble or a stone is obligatory. For the retaining wall which height does not exceed 60 cm, it is enough a pillow from a crushed stone in the thickness 20-30 cm. If the wall above 1 m, deposit at a depth of the base has to be not less than 70 cm, otherwise disclosing of cracks and other deformations of a design is inevitable. Walls with the concrete basis can be to 3 m in height, but request reinforcing that increases firmness of a construction.

Decorative effect to retaining walls achieves by facing with various materials, among which: a decorative brick, a natural stone, decorative concrete blocks and a wooden bar. If for building a retaining wall use materials with a beautiful obverse surface (for example, a facing brick or decorative concrete blocks) it is possible to save on facing.

Decorative landings, lawns, gravel gardens, rosariums, reservoirs, kitchen gardens and even orchards are placed on terraces. Extended grassy slopes are very decorative. However it should be considered that in order to avoid basis washing out of lawn coverings it is necessary to strengthen slopes plastic concrete grid. At creation of walls the most important condition – it is orientation to a sunny side, otherwise a strong shade from a vertical wall will lead to plants stretching, colour changing and weak flowering.
